The real reason for giving should be because we can not help but give?
God has blessed us so much that we gladly give of the abundance He has provided.
Notice I said out of the abundance. No one should have to give when their bills are not paid and they are in great need.
Tell me how that would glorify God?

We can tell people God cares and God is good but it is so hard to see the goodness of God in the dispair of our lives.
